Ski world cup in St. Moritz

The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2017 in St. Moritz were not only a success from a Swiss sport perspective. Also for the organisers the major event took place without noteworthy incidents involving the spectators. With their professional security services Securitas made a significant contribution to the safe and secure execution of the event. In their charge were also the army, Voluntaris and civil defence workers.

The 44th Alpine World Ski Championships from 6 to 19 February 2017 took place at St. Moritz fortunately in largely exceptional weather conditions. The resort in Upper Engadine presented itself at its winter's best and had enough snow to show off thanks to its altitude. St. Moritz had been the venue for the world ski championships in 1934, 1974 and 2003. Because the Olympic Winter Games of 1948 are considered world championships by FIS, St. Moritz has organised the championships to be held every two years for the fifth time in 2017, which is a record.

Security with a capital S
Clearly, with a sports event of this size attracting ski fans from all over the world security had to be paid special attention. Thereby, the fear of terror attacks was not particularly a priority. Instead, it was essential to make sure that the partly large crowds could move without incident within the cramped spaces of the finish area and the medal plaza. Therefore, not only tickets were checked at the entrances but also bags and glass bottles were confiscated. Patrols were present on the premises and reported thefts or bottlenecks at spectator crossings leading over the ski pists running across the grounds. The head of operations and the chief of security ensured smooth operation of security forces – also in constant consultation with the organisers and the police. Securitas was present with security staff from their own Regional Office St. Gallen reinforced by personnel from other regional offices. In addition, numerous soldiers, civil defence workers and Voluntaris stood under their command. The championship organisers relied completely on Securitas and appreciated their flexibility which proved itself with staff reinforcements scheduled at very short notice.
